Socrates Cafes are held all over the world to foster friendly, philosophical discussions. A small group of people meet to suggest and then vote on topics to discuss. Then, members are given time to voice opinions without interruption. Questions and intense listening follow. To meet like-minded people for good impassioned, yet rational and respectful conversation, please join. Registration is limited.

Join us for a fun and lively drum circle with Otha Day! From the core belief that rhythm can build community, promote well-being and healing, and create joy, Otha supports participants as they learn about the importance of rhythm in all aspects of life while taking part in activities and experiences, showing them that their heartbeat and breath are the rhythms of the soul and the pathways of connection to everyone

Otha Day has taught in the faculties of several schools in New England. He has taught college courses on Rhythm-Based Creativity and Communication, Music of the Harlem Renaissance, General Music Theory, and Jazz History. In addition, he has given many concerts as both a solo and ensemble pianist and currently teaches classical and jazz piano.

Caregivers are welcome (but not required) to accompany their child, however, they are expected to be active participants in the program as well.

2024 Eric Jordan Moskow Memorial Program is made possible thanks to the generosity of Richard and Shirley Moskow who established The Eric Jordan Moskow Memorial Fund in 2016. The Fund celebrates the life of the Moskow’s son Eric, who, as a young student at the Munroe School and in their neighborhood on Slocum Road, met the world with an open-hearted spirit, love of learning, and transcendent gift for friendship. The Fund supports library programs for young children that promote the values of peace and friendship, and touch on literature, the performing arts, social studies, math, engineering, science, and disciplines yet to be discovered.

Internationally published author and humorist Eve Schaub challenged her family to attempt the seemingly impossible: to live in the modern world, for an entire year, without creating any trash at all. The resulting memoir, Year of No Garbage, has been featured in the New Yorker, and was described by Bill McKibben as filled with “humor and grace.” Schaub reveals shocking truths she learned along the way about garbage, plastics, and recycling industry. This talk will trace the high and low points of Schaub’s family’s Zero Waste journey, focusing on lessons learned and where we go from here.

Following Eve’s presentation and Q&A, we will hear from Maggie Peard, Lexington Sustainability and Resilience Officer, and Erica Bouchard Rabins, Owner of Center Goods. Maggie will talk about curbside recycling options in Lexington and Erica will talk about greenwashing and how to avoid non-recyclable items with refillable and reusable items.

The Massachusetts Library Collaborative’s 50+ Job Seekers Group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, from 9:30am to 11:30am, via Zoom. If you are unemployed and actively looking, underemployed, seeking a new career direction, re-entering the job market after a long employment gap, or recently retired and looking for your Encore Career, this networking group program is perfect for you! Remember, 85% of jobs are found through networking!

Join us in a professional forum for networking with peers in a safe and comfortable environment conducive to developing new relationships and developing skills and strategies to help in your career transition. Each meeting features a new topic. Meetings include a presentation and interactive workshop on topics relevant to career transition, guest speakers, access to hiring managers, small group breakout rooms to network, and 1-on-1 coaching guidance. Participating on a regular basis will give job seekers the many tools and strategies needed for a successful job search.

Each biweekly meeting is facilitated by Deborah Hope, MBA, PCIC, an experienced executive career coach. Deborah is a former Fortune 500 executive, investment banker and entrepreneur. She transitioned to executive coaching over 12 years ago. Deborah has coached with Harvard Business School Executive Education programs and the Massachusetts Conference for Women. She has been trained or certified in a variety of coaching models and assessment tools. Deborah has facilitated 50+ job seekers networking groups since 2016.

This week’s topic (May 1) is Interview Strategies. Registration is required.

Foundation Meeting

The Perkins Book Group is looking for new members for their Thursday afternoon meetings. The group is designed to bring Perkins Library members together with members of the larger community. Lexington and Arlington area residents aged 50 years and older are encouraged to join!

Perkins is the free public library for people who have difficulty reading regular sized print. This includes people who are blind, visually impaired, physically unable to hold a book or reading disabled.

Limited to 15 people.

The James Webb Space Telescope is the largest astrophysics mission in NASA’s history, launched on December 25, 2021. JWST was designed to see the first galaxies forming shortly after the Big Bang, and has been nicknamed the “First Light Machine. Its infrared sensitivity allows it to peer into dusty environments, making it the perfect instrument to explore the regions where stars and planets form, and to trace how galaxies have evolved over time. Dr. Kathryn Flanagan, astronomer emerita at the Space Telescope Science Institute, will talk about this marvelous facility and updates from its second year of science discoveries.

Dr. Kathryn Flanagan, Space Telescope Science Institute – Dr. Kathryn Flanagan holds an astronomer emerita appointment at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), where she has served as JWST mission head, Deputy Director and Interim Director. The Institute is responsible for the science operations of the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as the mission and science operations of its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Dr. Flanagan came to the Institute in 2007 to head the Mission Office for JWST, with responsibility for developing the JWST Science and Operations Center. In her early career, she earned her PhD in physics at MIT, where she began working in the field of X-ray astronomy, with special interest in developing new instruments for space. She became part of the research staff at Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and MIT, and she has worked on multiple flight instruments.

She has participated in NASA’s advisory structure, co-chairing strategic planning documents and serving on advisory committees. She has been active in astronomical community organizations, and has been honored by election as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She has been active in education, beginning with service as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching math and physics in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and is a strong advocate for science outreach to the public and the next generation.

Have you ever thought that if only you could change the way you looked, your life would be better? It’s so easy to imagine that by changing the outside of our bodies, we’d feel better on the inside. But we all know that even if we could magically attain a so-called “perfect” body, our problems wouldn’t actually be solved. That’s because body image issues are never just about the body: they’re always about something deeper inside.

As a longtime personal trainer and coach, Jessi Kneeland has seen hundreds of clients achieve their fitness goals but still feel trapped in a web of body hatred, anxiety, obsession, and dysmorphia. Searching for a solution, Kneeland set out on a quest to discover what it truly takes to help people understand, process, and heal their body image issues for good. They share their discoveries in Body Neutral, where you’ll learn:
– The power of “body neutrality”—the ability to accept and respect your body, even if it isn’t the way you’d prefer it to be.

– Which of the four “body image avatars”—each of which represents a different root cause for body image issues—aligns with you and your relationship with your body: the self-objectifier, the high achiever, the outsider, or the runner.

– Actionable and unique methods to help you strip away the layers of false meaning, excess power, moral significance, and shame that have been preventing you from both connecting to and appreciating your body, and feeling truly worthy as a person.

Jessi Kneeland (they/them) is a coach, writer, and speaker dedicated to helping people overcome the suffering associated with body anxiety, insecurity, and negativity, and to improve their relationship with their bodies. After working as a personal trainer for a decade in New York City, Kneeland became an iPEC certified life coach and launched a coaching practice centered around the meaningful work of self-acceptance. Their innovative approach allows them to partner with clients individually and in groups to help them find body acceptance, a strong sense of self-worth, and true confidence. They are committed to the pursuit of body neutrality—a philosophy predicated on the idea that how we look is the least interesting and important thing about us. Their work has been featured in Women’s Health, Shape, Pop Sugar, Refinery29, BuzzFeed, Hello Giggles, and more, and their TED talk has been viewed by over 50,000 people. They live in North Carolina with their partner and cat.
